Fashion designer Donna Karan was quoted as saying that the scarf is the most versatile fashion accessory. [1]It can create new outfits and make old outfits look fresh again. [2] Scarves are available in a variety of fabrics, colors and styles, making them the perfect accessory for all seasons. [3]
The scarf was originally from Ancient Rome, where it was used to keep clean instead of warm. The garment was called a sudarium. Which means "sweat cloth" in english. It soon become a fashion item amongst women who wore styles that were made out of silk, pashmina, wool and cloth. [4][5] The scarf is very versatile, you can use it as a sarong, belt [6], wrapped in your hair, around your head and of course in a multitude of ways around your neck. [7]
In the 19th century the scarf became popular amongst men, who named the scarf the cravat. [8]
For women in the 20th century the Hermes scarf has become synonymous with wealth and style since it came into production in 1937. [9]
Modern scarves are commonly made using silk, acetate or rayon. Other fabrics include cotton or wool for more heavier style scarves. [10]
The fabric and shape of the scarf will determine how it can be worn. [11]
