Garment Goddess found in Gordonedit

She's been voted one of FHM's 100 Sexiest Women In The World, from 1997 to 2007. Men and women (although for very different reasons) adore her, but Jennifer Love Hewitt has not always been an icon of style. Like most of us, she had her hit and misses during her days playing Sarah Reeves in 'Party of Five' 1995-1999, or as the bone chilling screamer in 'I Know What You Did Last Summer'.

Although she had quite a notable denim moment in the 2003 film clip “Can I Go Now?”, during her brief dalliance with the music industry, it wasn’t until she landed the role of Melinda Gordon on the supernatural series 'Ghost Whisperer' (2005-2009), that women started to take notice of Love Hewitt as not only a style icon, but as a role model for positive body image.

During an interview with ‘Shape’magazine she said, “Hollywood used to revolve around women with curves, like Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe,” she says. “But now it’s so different. Not that long ago, I went to this celebrity luncheon, and I was the only person in the room eating. The other girls looked at me like I hadn’t gotten the memo, but I was hungry! All of these girls were afraid that if someone saw them eating, it would be a disaster. It makes no sense at all.” October 2009 issue

With 10-15 costume changes per episode, Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character ‘Melinda Gordon’ is a human clothes horse. Her character’s style embodies the sexy desirable wife, the caring home maker and now mother, the sassy antique dealer, the caring friend and detective sleuth for souls who have unfinished business.

With her brunette locks and engaging eyes her style, which could be described as 2000’s answer to Audrey Hepburn, is the perfect juxtaposition of classic, delicate vintage pieces, and modern day spunk. It’s romantic elegance meets quirky, whimsical girl next door. The re-working of certain vintage pieces in combination with everyday staples and ‘to die for (in) heels’, breaks the conventional rules and, in the process, creates fashion which is undeniably unique.

Love Hewitt’s voluptuous hour-glass figure provides the perfect vehicle for Joseph Porro’s creative genius as the costume designer on Ghost Whisperer. Emulating the 1950’s pin-up girls of Vargas and Gil Elvgren, Porro pays homage to designers including Balenciaga and Dior. Full circle dresses, trenches and cinched in waist lines, feature heavily in her wardrobe; as do a seemingly endless selection of night gowns (which have also featured as outer-wear).

What fashion delights will Jennifer Love-Hewitt have ‘in store’ for us in season 5? I know I’ll be watching to find out.

The Style Evolution of Love Hewitt/Melinda Gordonedit

Season 1edit

Antique vintage clothing featured very heavily; some of the pieces dating back more than 100 years.

Notable styles included:

Boot leg jeans and flares

Baby doll and empire line tops and dresses

Tailored/fitted blazer jackets, frilled around the waist

Lingerie worn as outer wear, tops and bed jackets teamed up with jeans

Sailor/nautical

Victorian, French provincial

1950’s-60’s dress styling

Extra long knitted cardigans

Season 2edit

The appearance of the maxi dress was a guest star. There was also an obvious shift to include clothing pieces that were more accissible and every day-paticularly turtle neck sweaters, in combination with vintage.

Season 3edit

The look became a little less about the cleavage and more about the story line yet remained glam.
