ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Afflicted with an all-consuming wanderlust, designer Mallyce Miller implants the adventurer’s spirit into her budding women’s collection: LAEKEN.
A California native, Miller had aspirations to design at an early age. However, it wasn’t until late 2007 that her focus turned to what had once been a far off possibility. With the help of her family’s encouragement and a bed-ridden sickness triggered by a pesky South Asian parasite, LAEKEN was born. LAEKEN is the manifestation of her international exploits and well-groomed eye for style.
Miller’s design aesthetic is experientially organic. With Chinatown candy shops, Fijian beaches, Cambodian temples and Bangkok water markets inspiring her collections; Miller uses what she has seen and what she hopes to see to create new designs. Along with globetrotting, you can catch Miller snapping photos like a female Sartorialist—if your street style engages her attention. Beyond her instinctual talents, her past work experience has also made her acutely suited to stay relevant in the ever-changing fashion landscape.
Miller has worked with top Los Angeles celebrity and editorial stylists and was a buyer for the popular vintage store Wasteland. Her work as a wardrobe stylist helped develop her keen understanding of proportion, fit and market trends, which has catapulted her early success. Miller studied Business Entrepreneurship and Art at the University of Southern California and with no formal design training, uses her smarts, local patternmakers, contractors and everyday inspirations to continue the growth of LAEKEN.
