Jennifer Hawkins at Fashions on the Field

About

Similar to the great Horse Racing occasions around the Globe such as Royal Ascot, the Melbourne Cup has a place in the fashion calendar as well as the racing calendar.

The VRC's Fashions On The Field competition was instigated in 1962, to encourage more women to attend the races with the aim of 'finding the smartest dressed women at the Carnival within economic restraints'.

As enthusiasm grew, the categories within the competition grew as did the prizes. Sections have evolved titled, 'The Open', 'Invitation Only', 'The Fashion Outfit', 'The Complete Hat', 'Young Contemporary Fashion', 'Designer Fashion', 'Classic Racewear', 'Crown Hats', 'Crown Carnivale' and 'Classic Hats' establishing a real social/ fashionista element to The Melbourne Cup.

In 2001, the men joined in the competition, refuting the ozzy tradition of rough neck , and whilst the racing is key to Flemington, the tickets for the fashion competitions are almost as as hotly contested as the ones for the stands.
