Paper was founded in June 1984 by editor/publishers Kim Hastreiter and David Hershkovits, who met while working at Soho Weekly news, a local hipster paper that covered the arts and clubs community of downtown in the 70s and early 80s. (Formerly, Hershkovits had been a college literature professor and Hastreiter, a fine artist.) The colleagues founded Paper in the basement of Hastreiter's apartment, where it remained during its formative years, as it evolved from a fold-out into a glossy.
