The Designer

Michelle Gibson

Live Laugh Love... These words go deeper than just a favorite quote for Michelle Gibson; it has become the basis of how she lives her life as well as the core principle behind her clothing line. Growing up in Bowie, Maryland with a house of two scientists, the world of fashion seemed like a world of fantasy. And as a young girl, when asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?" she would say -- “to be happy and the CEO!” Oddly enough that is exactly what she has done at the age of 20, with the debut of her clothing line Simply L3ve.

Having come to Howard University Michelle had one goal in mind and that was to start her own fashion line. Having no prior business experience or even a clue where to begin, Michelle realized the resources and opportunities Howard University could offer her. After deciding to major in fashion merchandising with a minor in business management, she began to absorb the creative world of fashion and photography through volunteering at local fashion shows and in the fashion department at the Warner Theater. Michelle has been able to juggle more than becoming a rising fashion designer, she is also a Resident Assistant, served her sophomore year as Miss Bethune Annex, and coached various step teams like the Howard University Step Team and for the Washington Middle School for Girls’ Step Up to Health program. Even though she has achieved all of this fashion has always been her first love.

Since the first draft of her business plan in March 2011, Michelle’s vision for this line was innovative; she wanted to bring back the feelings of what it meant to be in love, raise awareness about eco-fashion, all the while paying homage to the styles of the 50’s. Simply L3ve is special in that it truly does achieve all of these goals. The romance that the clothing evokes is undeniable and you can feel the love put into every piece of clothing. The line also uses recycled fabrics as a way to advocate for a change in the fashion world, bringing about a new idea to Eco-fashion. With its launch on February 14th, Valentine’s Day, Michelle hopes to make the ladies of Simply L3ve to feel confident, beautiful, flirty and important.
